The second (2005) Arena special (they also did one in 1984) on Francis Bacon offers a portrait of one of Britain's most important twentieth century artists. The film opens with some fairly graphic footage of bullfighting (be warned!) interspersed with an interview with Bacon in black and white, talking in a mixtue of English and (subtitled) French about his life, his work, his fears and so on.
The programme looks at his background, growing up as part of the Anglo-Irish ruling class during WWI. There are interviews with the man himself and with members of his family, including his sister, and friends. It charts the various influences on his work throughout his career. The stories behind his most famous paintings - including the Triptych (1945) (which I think is on display at the Tate Modern?) and the 'Picture'(1946) -held by the New York Museum of Modern Art - which began as his attempt "to make a bird alighting on a field". The final result is a scene which an interviewer refers to as 'the butchershop'! Such is Bacon's figural landscape and unique imagery.
A thorough and interesting biography, and a must for anyone with an interest in modernism and the history of art.
